Remember that Topps card of Kazuo Uzuki that everyone forgot about when we all realized it was just another stupid gimmick? Guess what? It was all an April Fool's joke.

I'm not making that up.

It says so right in the press release.

I'll leave to the judgment of the reader to determine whether the joke is on you the collector, or on Topps.

Speaking of gimmicks, Mario over at Wax Heaven has the scoop on 2008 Topps Finest. Yes, the idea Topps ripped off of Dr. Wax Battle the cast of the Topps TV Rip Party is now a subject for an autographed insert. So for those of you patiently waiting for your boxes of Finest to arrive at the local Hobby shop, buyer beware. Your one-per-mini-box "hit" might be this.

So, in other words, Topps purposefully inserted a stealth insert in 2008 Topps Series 1 of a fake player, specifically to fuck with everyone, and then wait nearly two months to tell us what they did.

And then there's the crap with Topps Heritage, Finest, and the Red Sox team card (which I pulled recently).

And then Upper Deck with the Hillary card, and then the entire Beckett-gate issue.

I'd almost say that it's time for Donruss to get a MLB license again....but god, what good would that do?

Personally, I'd be all for each company being limited to a specific number of releases, lower than they are now (say 10-12) with definite price tiers instituted and max # of products per tier.

Then realize that the 'RC' logo is a complete and utter failure, and will continue to be so as long as Topps has Bowman Draft and Bowman products with 'prospect' cards which we all consider to be the true RCs. Granted, the other companies are just as much to blame.

Oh well, we'll keep buying the crap, and they'll keep pulling this shit.

I was about to go buy my first Finest mini-box ever, but I might have to rethink that. If I pulled the ass master up there as my hit, I'd probably swear off new product forever.

Actually, that might be a *good* thing....

I am glad that I didn't fall for it. Come to think of it, many of us didn't. I just feel for the ones spending tons of money investing in an April Fool's joke.

what was the Dr. wax battle idea they ripped off?

I hear that the ToppsTv autos are in addition to the other autos and would not be the "hit" of the minibox.

Pass me a '51 Bowman common or a '53 Red Man over the Uzi, Fukudome, Skydome, or Andrew Dice Clay.
