Gordo-mania Running Wild!

All apologies to the horse.
Well, we now know the name of the nitwit who paid $7500 for the Alex Gordon Topps card. Yep, it was Keith Olbermann.

Hey, if Olbermann wants to throw down seven-and-a-half large on the next Billy Ripken "Fuck Face" card, that's his choice. I wish I had that kind of loot. But am I the only one who finds it a little strange that this card was purchased by a guy who used to be on the Topps payroll?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting that Topps and KO are in some grand conspiracy. But it is kind of strange.

You need to stop getting your Keith Olbermann news from sites like OlbermannWatch, which hates him simply for holding too many liberal viewpoints for their liking.

Olbermann was never "on the Topps payroll" and never said he was. He IS a consultant for Topps, which, to their credit, is all OlbermannWatch credited him as saying. This is hardly news; he's mentioned it before on Dan Patrick's show on ESPN Radio. But he is not "on the Topps payroll." The only way they pay him is in cards.

Are you seeing something interesting here? Olbermann is consulting for Topps, he's getting paid in cards, so you'd think if he wanted an Alex Gordon rookie card, who would have a better inside line? Maybe he'd even manage to get several that he could then trickle out slowly for auction and make a ton of money from.

But...no. On the contrary, he's paying OTHER people top dollar for THEIR cards. Which would seem to indicate that he has no secret pipeline to any of them himself, and certainly no motivation to deliberately help Topps create a scarce card.

Holy crap! Somebody's actually reading my blog!

Actually I do watch Olbermann. On most evenings, I flip back and forth between O'Reilly, Krazy Keith, and whatever ball game happens to be on. The German's have a word for it: Schadenfreude. The perverse satisfaction I receive by seeing the once-great Keith Olbermann's career implode with every nutty left-wing conspiracy theory spewed and O'Reilly pot-shot delievered.

Fair enough. KO is not "on the Topps payroll." I stand corrected. It should be noted however, that he has accepted in-kind compensation (free cards) from Topps in the past.

Look, if KO wants to shell out $7500 for this generation's Billy Ripken "Fuck Face" card, well then, God bless him. I'm just saying that he's stupid for doing so, and that I wouldn't.
